What are the different types of fireplaces?

When faced with a wide range of fireplaces, it can be difficult to decide which one will be best for your client. The main thing to consider is whether there is a chimney or not as, without one, your client may be limited in their choice. Electric fireplaces do not need a chimney or flue and have a flame only effect so your client can enjoy a fiery look without warming up the room. For a more practical heating solution, a gas fireplace is the perfect option due to their easy operation and realistic flame effects. Some may require a chimney or a flue for ventilation so it’s important to check your client’s home before attempting to fit a gas fire.

What is the most efficient fireplace for heating?

When compared to central heating, fireplaces are less efficient at heating a room. So, if your client is faced with the decision of opting for a fire over central heating, they will be better off putting their radiators on to heat their home. Electric fires are often less fuel efficient when it comes to heating a room because they have a lower heat output. As a result, they need to be on longer to provide a similar warming experience to central heating. Compared to electric fires, gas fires are more efficient when it comes to heating a space as they use a smaller amount of energy. However, for a more climate conscious customer, they may be less attractive due to needing to burn the same fossil fuels as central heating. Stoves can also be used as an option for heating a room, but where these are wood burners, they will be less energy efficient than gas fires for heating a room and can have higher running costs depending on how much wood your client will need to use to heat their home.

Do modern fireplaces need a chimney?

Despite what many believe, not all fireplaces do need a chimney. If you, or your client, do not have a chimney on the house, an electric fire may be a good choice as they, typically, don’t require one. So, your client can enjoy the look of realistic flames, without worrying about getting a chimney sweep out! As long as there is a power supply nearby, they can get settled into their home as soon as possible after it’s been installed. If there is a chimney, and your customer would like to still enjoy an electric heating source, they can still use an electric fire, but they may be better opting for an inset electric fire so that they can keep walking space in their room.

Can I put a TV over a fireplace?

Most TVs come with a warning not to put them above a fireplace. This is because the heat rising from the fire can damage the television. If you are in ever any doubt on whether a TV can be mounted above a fireplace, it’s best to check your instruction manual. Using a thicker fire surround can help mitigate some of these issues, as can using a smaller fireplace. Some electric fires also come with an effect only setting so you can enjoy a fiery effect without having the room being warmed. Placing the TV further up the wall can also help, but you may end up needing to move this higher than you expect so that it is less affected by the heat.
