Absolute Rubbish
Bought this thinking it was the same as the Colron dyes I’ve been using for year. How wrong I was. It’s complete rubbish - water based junk, more akin to fence paint. Don’t waste your money. Go online and buy Chestnut, Morrells or Dartfords.

Does what it says on the tin!
Colton wood stain is a real quality product which I have used for many years.

Water based rubbish
I had several different colour tins of the spirit based product you could mix to match existing finishes. I bought this thinking it was the same in a new package, but it's completely incompatible and doesn't soak into the surface. So where can I get some real wood dye now.

Expensive but the best I can find.
Applied to birch plywood (think the plywood boxes from scandinavian countries) it produces a nice dark antiquey finish that just needs a light sanding and a coat of water based polyurethane to create a very effective finish and overall look for wood. Personally I preferred the old Peruvian mahogany as it was a slightly redder colour but this works well.

Water-based pain
Totally agree that this is nowhere near as good as the old solvent based dye. More expensive and you require probably 2-3 times as much. Bad news as makes restoring floor much more difficult as now you have to strip back to bare wood every time. Too bad when your floor needs restoring very 3-4 years (Labradors...)

Colron Wood Dye
Water based - not as good as the old solvent based dye. A lot more coats required to build up colour. Density indication shown on label very misleading, would need many coats to achieve
