Good Product if used right!

Make sure you use the product when it is hot enough, and the decking is nice and dry. I found it worked best when you put a thick layer on, and start scrubbing after just a few minutes with a handheld wire brush. Then let the flake bits dry before brushing off whith a normal brush.

Don’t bother

The weather was dry and not cold as instructed on the can. you would need one can for a small area and a lot of hard work. I’ve striped back quite a lot of wood furniture, with better products. It would be cheeper to buy new decking.

Good product, read some tips before using

The product really works. We wanted to sand down our deck, to be able to apply a new oil. We have never done this before, so equipped ourselves with sanders, but it took absolutely ages with them, as the planks bowl with time and the sander can only work on flat surfaces. I bought this Ronseal product to try on the second half of the deck and it worked really well! The 2.5L was just enough to finish the 3x4m area + a couple of steps (the picture shown shows the progress half way in, to show the before and after difference in colour). It is really easy to apply, a bit of a slimy consistency, so just be careful not to waste the product by letting it fall between the planks of wood. It takes time and elbow grease (lots of scrubbing), yet it was still 3-4 times quicker than the sanders. Advice for use: have a bowl of water next to you while you're scrubbing. If you see an area drying out - wet it slightly until you get to it. Once the product dries - it won't work and you'll need to reapply. Keep rinsing your scrubbing tools in the water, so you might need to re-fill the bucket a few times. Don't apply the product on too large areas if you don't have enough hands on deck to then scrub it down before it dries. Arm yourself with metal scourers or other such good scrubbing tool. And several of them - I used 3-4, but they really help. Don't wait for the full duration indicated, as the product might have dried too much by then. Try small areas (after 15 mins) and see if the finish is already coming out. Note that while you're scrubbing, the remaining areas are still drying out, as scrubbing takes longer than applying. Overall very happy with the product and the final result, it saved us time and I wish I had bought it in the first place instead of sanding the first half.

It does work if you follow the directions exactly.

Hard work but does the job. Having read lots of negative reviews about this stripper, I had my doubts about its effectiveness. I was glad I gave it a try. It is vital to follow the instructions exactly as stated. I used on a dry not too hot day and after 20 minutes got a scraper and scraped a small area and the old oil started to lift. Yes it's very messy and takes a long time to remove over a big area but it does work, and removed four layers of decking oil using a wire brush. So glad I tried it for myself. Expensive but worked.

GOOD PRODUCT

easy to apply and does the job I used it on a previously stained wooden decking

Not nearly as good as it claims on the tin.

Had several goes with this on a large area of decking. Used as directed on tin with lots of wire brush scrubbing. Worked better on some areas than others - some areas stripped back to bare wood, others left very patchy. There must be better alternatives out there surely

Overpriced and disappointing

This hugely expensive paint stripper only had minimal effect on removing old paint from our decking. In the end we abandoned it and resorted to sanding and scraping instead. A waste of time and money.

Does what it says on the tin

We bought this product to strip old paint off our deck and it does work but you still have to put abit of work in and scrub it hard. as other reviews people just want a easy way and there isn't one I would 100% recommend this product as long as your willing to get on your knees and scrub the paint off also.

EssJay54 - 1 / 5 - 11/06/2023

Doesn’t do exactly what it says on the tin

I was really hoping that the reviews I read (after having already spent the money) were wrong. I followed instructions to the T and gave it the second test time. I scrubbed and then power washed and the deck is still covered in varnish. This is the second Ronseal product I’ve tried and been disappointed both times.

Does the job

Having removed 90% of the decking paint with a power washer, needed just a little extra help in removing the stubborn 10%. Applied and left for half hour, I did agitate the gunk after about 15 minutes. After time was up hosed down with the power washer and except for a few screw holes and decking board edges it has removed pretty much all of the old paint. I suspect many of the bad reviews are from people expecting this to remove the old paint with little or no effort. For clarity it has taken over an hour to remove paint from about a metre square bit of decking.
