PSD2 (Second Payment Services Directive)

What is PSD2?

The Second Payment Services Directive (PSD2) is the EU legislation which sets regulatory requirements for firms that provide payment services. An important part of PSD2 is the requirement for Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) on most online payments. A common example of an SCA is 3DS or 3D Secure authentications. This new requirement is designed to reduce fraud and improve security

What is Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)?

Strong Customer Authentication is a new mandatory requirement for authenticating online payments. Customers will have to confirm their payments in an online shop with another ‘factor’, for example, with a fingerprint in an online banking app, or a One Time Passcode (OTP) that is already set up with an online banking account. There is a risk that payments that require Strong Customer Authentication but don’t pass this Strong Customer Authentication may be declined by the customer’s bank.
